Course Description

This course will cover microcomputer operating systems, hardware and application software. Spreadsheets, database management, word processing and 2-D graphics packages will be specific areas of coverage. Lab exercises will follow lecture and class discussion.

 

 

Prerequisites

None

 

Attendance/Participation

Students are expected to attend all class sessions. Students are expected to stay in class until dismissed by the instructor. Students who have completed and turned in all of the assignments for the week may ask for permission to leave early. Students are not expected to be surfing the web or doing other activities on the computers that are not directly related to course assignments during class time. Such activities will result in the student being removed from the PC lab!

 

 

Evaluation

Final grade will be based on six areas:

 

Final Project (25%):

Your Final Project will be a PowerPoint presentation about a personal hobby, object or activity. The presentation must be at least FIVE slides long. The project must include text, photos, and animated text or objects and slide transitions. Extra credit will be earned if a chart is included and/or it is converted to a web format.  Final Project is due Thursday, December 11th at 10:00am and will not be accepted late!

 

Project Assignments (30%): Each student will be required to complete the Projects assigned for Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint units, as well as, an Integrated Project. The projects are laid out step-by-step in the textbook. Students are expected to complete the projects as individuals, not in groups.

Students are encouraged to assist and learn from each other.

 

Employee Characteristics (10%): Students will receive a weekly grade based on their demonstration of basic employee characteristics expected by employers. These include Dependability, Punctuality, Teamwork, Communication, and Participation. The instructor will rate each characteristic weekly on a scale of 0 to 4:          

0 - Unacceptable

                                    2 - Consistently meets minimum requirements

                                    3 - Occasionally exceeds minimum requirements 

4 - Consistently exceeds minimum requirements

 

Prerequisite Assignments (10%): Prerequisite assignments are prerequisites to quizzes. Prerequisite assignments are located in the textbook support website found the Learn It Online sections. The course schedule (below) has the web link and assignment details. Each unit’s prerequisite assignments must be completed before the unit quiz is taken.

 

Quizzes (15%): Quizzes will be printed from the textbook support website found in the Learn It Online sections. The course schedule (below) has the web link and quiz details. The quizzes will be completed as the student progresses through the unit assignments. Quizzes cannot be completed before the prerequisite assignments are completed and turned in. Quizzes must be completed within one class period of the completion of the prerequisite assignments. Quizzes will not be accepted late.

 

Final Test (10%): A comprehensive written Final Exam will be given. All students are expected to take it.

 

 

Final Grading Scale:            A 90 - 100%

B….80 - 89%

C 70 - 79%

D….60 - 69%

F….59% or below

The following are non-negotiable expectations of

classroom and lab conduct.

 

  • Class members will attend class on time. The instructor reserves the right to refuse admittance to anyone who arrives late for class! (Ten minutes grace for students and instructor on rare occasions.)
  • Class members will refrain from negative comments about others in the class.
  • Class members will refrain from disrupting the learning of others by theirs words and behavior.
  • Class members will adhere to all safety policies.
  • Cell phones will not ring or be used for conversation during classroom or lab sessions.
  • Class members will refrain from using tobacco products during classroom or lab sessions.
  • Class members will refrain from sleeping in class. Sleep at home, be alert in class!
  • Class members will endeavor to conduct themselves in a professional manner.

Free Lance Project:

Creating a Personal Tool Database

 

 

Create a database that can be used to inventory all of your tools. Include at least; name of tool, replacement cost, type of tool, vendor and storage place in the database. After the database is created list at least 40 of your current tools in the database. Print the database on ONE page.

 

Create a sketch and have it approved by the instructor

before beginning on the PC.

 

Run two queries, an AND Query & an OR Query, on the data

base and print the results.
