Course Description:A one-semester course for students with a background in Elementary Algebra. Topics covered include a review of fundamental processes, linear and quadratic equations, factoring, exponents, radicals, fractions, functions, and logarithms.
General Course Goals: Upon completion of this
course, the students will be able to: demonstrate mastery of course content
and techniques necessary for further study in mathematics; demonstrate
a basic understanding of problem solving approaches used to investigate
and understand mathematical concepts; recognize and place in algebraic
notation, application problems within mathematics; read, write, and orally
express mathematical ideas utilizing mathematical notation, represent and
solve situations that involve variable quantities using expressions, equations,
and inequalities; and appreciate both the intrinsic, extrinsic and humorous
nature of mathematics.
Testing: There will be eight chapter exams and a possible comprehensive final (more on the final later) that will each be worth 100 points. Calculators may be used but NOT be shared. Students who show up late for an exam will not be given any extra time to complete their exam and they will be asked for their exams at the time class officially ends. All exams must be finished on the same day the exam was given.
Makeup Testing Procedure: Students who must miss an exam, should notify me promptly. The first time a test is missed, you must take the comprehensive final. The final is the make-up test. The score from the final will be substituted for the missed exam. This is your make-up test. The final will be givien on the last day of class. If you miss a second exam, you must make an appointment with meto take a make-up exam. It must be made up before the next scheduled test. NO POINTS WILL BE GIVEN FOR ANY ADDITIONAL EXAM MISSED. However, you make take tests early at no penalty. Students who do not miss any exams, do not have to take the final. You may take the final and substitute it for your lowest test score. The comprehensive final will be given on the last day of class and will obviously be more difficult than the missed chapter exam.
Homework: Please put your first and last name, homework section on the top right corner of your paper. Homework from the sections that will be on the test is due on test days. I will ask you to highlight 10 chosen problems and have you hand in all your homework in a folder. Since you do not know which 10 problems I will ask for, it is important for you to do all your homework. Homework is worth 15 points each time. Ten points for each problem that is highlighted and 5 points for completion of the rest of the homework. These are not extra credit points and cannot be made up except once, then 10 different problems will be chosen and will be due the next class. You have ONE pass on late homework if you are absent or forgot it that day. After that, no late homework will be accepted, absent or not. These are not extra credit points and cannot be made up. Points will be taken away for missed sections or omitted problems. You must show all your work to get full credit. Since only odd problems are assigned and the answers are in the back of the book, I will not award any credit if only answers are shown! You should not miss any problems since they are in the back of the book. Homework is extremely important for your success in this class. Not only is the total worth more than a test (120 points), it definitely will help you do well on the tests.
*There will also be some points awarded that will range between 5 and 10 points for work that will be done in class. These are usually worth 50 points and cannot be made up. Therefore it is important to come to class.
Projects: There will be one or two projects varying from 15-30 points.
Extra Credit:Occasionally extra credit quizzes will be offered the first 5 minutes of class (or the five minutes after a break for a 2 hour class). It is disruptive and rude to habitually walk in late, therefore, BE ON TIME!! THESE POINTS CANNOT BE MADE UP IF YOU ARE LATE OR MISS CLASS THAT DAY.
Attendance: You are expected to attend all classes. If you do have to miss, YOU are responsible for the material covered and contacting me about schedule changes. You are expected to be on time for each class. The attendance standards are based upon national collegiate standards and are put in place for your success. Do NOT pack up your books near the end of each class, as this is distracting to your instructor and your fellow classmates.
Added incentive: If you have perfect attendance and no tardies or leave early, you may redo your lowest test on the last day of class.
Cheating: It is demanded that you do your own work. Incidents of cheating will be reported to the dean and may cause you to fail the course. See the student handbook for more information.
Free Tutoring: If you find yourself having problems with any of the material, contact me promptly. If my office hours do not meet your needs, schedule an appointment with me. I will be more than happy to help someone who wants to help him/herself. You can also get help from the tutors in the Student Success Center in room 2101or from videos that go with the text that are kept in the library. Make sure to ask for the Martin-Gay series, 2nd edition.
