PRIVATECourse Description: This course is an introduction to micro computing using the Windows operating system.  It includes instruction and graded exercises in word processing, spreadsheets, database, and graphical presentation applications, using the Microsoft Office integrated software package.  Since this course is designed primarily to develop basic computer skills, the majority of class time will be spent working on in lab computer exercises.

Homework Assignments: Assignments and due dates are outlined on the attached schedule.  Make sure your name and Project Number/Exercise Number appear at the top right hand corner of the paper.  Please staple the pages together.  Do not staple different assignments together.  Disorganized assignments (pages out of order, mislabeled, unreadable, etc.) will be handed back with a grade of zero.  If there are multiple sheets to be handed in, sequence them in the order you were told to print them in the exercise.

It is permissible to assist classmates in general discussions of computing techniques.  General advice and interaction are encouraged.  Each person, however, must develop his or her own solutions to the assigned projects and homework.  A student may not use or copy (by any means) another’s work (or portions of it) and represent it as his/her own.  Each student must have his/her own copy of the computer file(s) and printout(s) for each assignment.  Be prepared to show your computer file(s) to the instructor upon request.  Projects are worth 20 points each and the end of project exercises are worth 10 points each.

Late Assignments:  Late assignments will be accepted for up to one week with a 30 % penalty.  No assignments will be accepted more than one week late.

Interactive Laboratory Assignments: Interactive laboratory assignments are outlined in the class schedule.  These labs are excellent tutorials and take 10 to 15 minutes to complete.  These are for supplemental instruction and are not graded.

Project Exams: Each student will complete four graded computer laboratory exercises done in the lab using Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Access.  These exams are each worth 50 points and will be similar to the class projects.  The requirements for these projects will be discussed during class.  You may use your book, notes, or printouts.  You may not use any other computer files, either on a floppy disk, or on the hard drive.  The exams have a two-hour limit and must be completed in the one class session, so plan accordingly.  Missed exams must be made up within one week of the class exam date and will have a 30 % late penalty deduction.  Exams may be taken early to avoid penalty.

Final Exam: The final exam is worth 100 points.

Extenuating circumstances will be handled on a case-by-case basis.

Bonus PowerPoint Project: Students may earn up to 20 bonus points by developing and presenting a four to five minute PowerPoint presentation covering a topic of their choice.

Diskette Check: The instructor reserves the right to check student’s diskettes at any time, to be sure that the assignments turned in for credit are the work of the student.

Attendance: Attendance will be taken.  Good attendance is important for success in this class.  If you are absent, it is your responsibility to obtain class notes/assignments from another classmate.  Notify your instructor by phone or e-mail if an absence is necessary.

Free Tutoring: If you find yourself having problems with any of the material, please contact me promptly. You can also get help from the tutors in Student Success Center (Rooms 2101 & 2017). There is no cost for this tutoring.

SCC Academic Honesty Policy: Submission of another person’s work is a violation of the SCC Academic Honesty Policy. Students who are suspected of violating this policy will be referred to the dean for appropriate action.  This may cause you to fail the course. See the student handbook for more information.
