Lab experiences in this course will be hands-on experience on our equipment, use of netlab, and Packet Tracer simulation.

Course Description:

This is the second of three semester courses designed to provide students with experience in current and emerging networking technology. Instruction includes, but is not limited to, network terminology and protocols, network standards, LANs, WANs, OSI models, Ethernet, Token Ring, FDDI, TCP/IP addressing protocol, routers, dynamic routing, routing, and the network administrator's role.

Student Objectives:

  • Attend all classes in the training
  • Complete all chapters of the Semester 2 CISCO Curriculum
  • Complete all essential labs
  • Pass the Semester 2 Final Exam with a score of 70% or better
  • Complete the Semester 2 Skills Final within one hour
  • Complete the Course Feedback form

Major Topics Covered:

Router configuration, router file management, routing protocols, TCP/IP error and control messages, ACLs.

Evaluation:

Your grade is calculated from points earned on assignments and exams.

Standards: A=90%-100% B=80%-89% C=70%-79% D=60%-69% F= 60%

Assessment:

Testing:

You will access module and final exams on the CISCO assessment site.  Exams are enabled by the instructor during class. You may take module exams three times with the final score the one that is recorded for your grade. You may take the final exam twice with the final attempt being the one that is recorded.  Chapter exams are worth 11% toward your final grade. The final is worth 20% of your final grade.  A skills final will be administered also worth 20% of your final grade.

Labs:

There will be a series of labs throughout the course assocated with your chapters.  You will complete these labs as directed by your instructor. Labs are worth 40% toward your final grade.

Case Study:

There will be a case study assigned worth 9% of  your final grade.

Journal/Logbook:

Both Cisco and your instructor strongly recommend that you keep good notes in the form of a journal or logbook as you move through your course.

Attendance/Participation:
  • Attendance is required.
  • If you are unable to attend a class, you are to notify your instructor via emal lwalljasper@eicc.edu or voice mail 563-336-5217 prior to the start of class; and check the course website for missed work.
  • Attendance will be reported to the financial aid office and may affect your loan and or scholarship status.
  • Utilize the eCompanion site for discussion and resources outside of class.

Late Assignment Policy:
Assignments will be due on a specified date.  Late assignments will be assessed a 10% per day late penalty.  After one week the assignment will not be accepted.

Exam Make-up Policy:
If arrangements are made prior to a missed exam, students can make arrangements to take make-up tests at the testing center at the Kahl Building .  These arrangements can be made at the second floor reception area.  If no prior arrangements have been made, the student can elect to take a comprehensive final at the end of the course to replace the score for the missed exam.

Academic Dishonesty Policy:
Policies on Plagiarism/Academic Dishonesty are found in the EICCD Student Code of Conduct.

Incomplete Policy:
Incomplete grades (I) are given for work that is not completed during an academic term due to justifiable extenuating circumstances. To qualify for an "I" grade, you will need to sign an Incomplete Contract Agreement with the class instructor. Work must be completed by the date agreed upon and turned in to the instructor no later than mid-term of the following semester (not including summer sessions). Courses not completed by that time will automatically receive an "F".

Feedback Policy:

I will answer all emails and voicemails within 24 hours of receipt Monday through Friday. I ocassionally check emails over the weekend and when the college is closed. All assignments will be graded in the order in which I receive them. You can expect 24-48 hour return on assignments. Exams are multiple choice and receive immediate feedback upon completion. The above policy assumes no computer/connectivity issues.

Food and Drink:
Because of the potential damage to equipment, food and drinks are absolutely not allowed in the classroom. There is a break area just outside of the classroom.

Cell phone policy:
Before class starts, turn off or activate silent mode on cell phones and pagers. Please leave the room before answering a silent mode call.

Study Tips:

  1. Review the objectives of each lesson.
  2. Take the quiz for the Module first.
  3. Go through the lesson online.  Make sure you view all pictures and presentations.  If you encounter a word you have trouble defining, look it up in the online glossary.
  4. Take notes in your logbook. Create a Mind Map or notes of the material new to you.
  5. Complete your Module worksheets and labs throughout the lesson.
  6. Take the Module quiz again to test your knowledge.
  7. If you have the optional text, read the section from the textbook and do the exercises as you encounter them.
  8. Highlight only text in your book that you NEED to find again, or that is NEW to you.
  9. Review the objectives of the lesson to make sure you have gained knowledge in each area.
  10. Take the online Module exam.
  11. Review your Mind Maps, notes, and vocabulary each day.
  12. Form a study group that meets on a regular basis.
