Course Description:

The course is designed to assist the student to review previously developed concepts and techniques and to prepare for future study in mathematics. Topics include solving equations and inequalities; graphing equations and inequalities; functions including polynomial, absolute value, greatest integer, exponential and logarithmic functions; systems of equations; matrices; permutations; combinations; and the Binomial Theorem.  Graphing calculator required

Prerequisite:

MAT 073, Intermediate Algebra, with a final grade of at least "C", or the equivalent of two years of high school algebra with a satisfactory placement test score.

Other Requirements:

The text is College Algebra, Fourth Edition, by Mark Dugopolski, © 2007 Pearson Education, Inc. You will also need a MathXL account and a TI graphing calculator (preferably a TI-83 or -84). Visit theTI calculators web site for more information.

Attendance and Makeups:

Please have your cell phones and pagers turned off during class time. Regular attendance is expected and will be checked at the beginning of each class. If you miss class, you are still responsible for all material covered, announcements made, homework due, and tests given during your absence. In addition to time in class, you should expect to spend an average of eight hours outside of class each week working with the material.

Notify me promptly if you must miss a test. It might be possible for you to take the test in advance or before the next class meeting. Otherwise, you must take a makeup test later in the semester. You are allowed only one makeup test, and it will be a comprehensive exam at the end of the term that covers material from the entire semester.

Homework and quizzes

I will be assigning odd-numbered exercises from the textbook and exercises in MathXL.  Quizzes will consist of a combination of MathXL quizzes and selected problems from the assigned textbook exercises.  I give no credit for problems turned in late or for miscopied problems.

Extra Help!

If you are having trouble with any of the material, please come in to see me during my office hours. In addition to my office hours, you can get help in the Success Center (room 2015), by using MathXL, or bvy viewing the lectures again.
