RETURN TO MICROCOMPUTER APPLICATIONS (SUMMER)

GOALS OF THE MICROCOMPUTER APPLICATIONS COURSE:

In general, this course allows you to practice a few common methods of using a computer. If you complete the course successfully, you should be able to use a computer for various personal and business reasons.  However, computers and their programs change frequently, and there is never enough time in one course to describe every detail of current computer use, let alone every detail that is about to be invented. Therefore, you should also use the course to try to build the ability to learn about computers. This should help you adapt to whatever changes are coming.

In particular, upon successful completion of this course, you should be able to:

  1. Describe the basic applications of computers such as word processing, database, spreadsheets, internet, and others, and define the basic terminology associated with these applications.
  2. Describe basic details of computer hardware and software that you might encounter during purchase and ordinary use of these items. This includes, among other things, computer virus protection.
  3. Use certain types of software including
  1. a word processor (currently WORD)
  2. a spreadsheet (currently EXCEL)
  3. a database management system (currently ACCESS)
  4. an internet browser and email (currently INTERNET EXPLORER and Web-based email)
  5. PowerPoint
  6. Windows XP
  7. See the class schedule for 2:00 MWF for a more complete description of topics in the course.
